Man, I love the CCC. To me, they are what being a hacker is truly about.
I know this place calls itself Hacker News, but to me being a hacker always had a countercultural element, a distrust of power structures. This place is the power structure and reinforces it...
It was actually really confusing to me when I started to hang out on English language CS spaces that the rest of the world is not like that. I thought this just comes with the prevalence of open source but apparently not.
Looking at the recent post about small shops on English high streets, it seems like the only thing people on here hate more than poor people is children.
Most of this site is rich senior engineers who work corporate or big tech jobs in San Francisco. They are extremely out of touch with the world, even with the rest of America.
You can't live in a city filled with billionaires, see people every day sleeping on the street because rent is too high and go on without picking a side. Most HN types don't want to lose their comfortable position and they're scared socialism will take it away no matter how many times everyone explains why that's not true.
Their dream in life is to become a founder and CEO who can look down on everyone. Getting rich is not enough. They want power and they don't want to share it. That's where the antisocial and fascist ideas come from.
I just got notified today that my talk "Digital Rite of Passage - a framework for guiding kids into digital adulthood" was accepted to the Ethics, Society & Politics track, so cool to see it there!
I really hope I can get tickets. This is the first time I'd be attending, and after going to my first Defcon this year and realizing I'd found my people, I decided I should absolutely do Congress. I'm looking forward to it
Unfortunately while I got in the queue successfully on the second, they sold out when I was still waiting. Maybe Thursday I can try again, I will be on a plane during the Wednesday one

In my experience CCC is much more enjoyable than defcon. More community oriented, creative and non-commercial.
