I made something similar, with more of a focus on small tech blogs:

https://blogs.hn

I’ve been wanting to add an omnibus RSS feed, but haven’t had the time. Let me know if you can think of easy ways to merge a bunch of RSS feeds!

  • pests 2 years ago

Entire startups have come and gone trying to solve issues like that

    • zilti 2 years ago

Not really. Every "planet.whatever-project.tld" has been doing that since many years

  • maximevalette 2 years ago

Merging RSS feeds is what we do at FeedPress (among other things). Let me know if you want to try, that could be a great challenge!

You can only submit a site thru a megacorporate proprietary service? Why is Microsoft GitHub involved when talking about “small web”--it is the opposite of small & indie + requires ToS & privacy concerns around accounts with that service (not to mention those blocked by US sanctions).

  • szszrk 2 years ago

Do you have a proposals how to tackle those challenges?

    • CuteDinosaur 2 years ago

well, yeah actually. This is not an excuse, everything can be changed into something more open and not Microsoft software.

This is the thing that’s going to make me finally build my rss feed and maybe start publishing more regularly again.

Kagi seems to be leading the counterrevolution and I can get behind that

"Add Site" menu shows a popup saying:

'Hit "Add Site," and a new tab will open where you can add the feed to the end of our list. We'll sort it out after we take a look.'

but then clicking the button just goes to: https://github.com/kagisearch/smallweb/edit/main/smallweb.tx...

I guess technically "you can add the feed to the end of our list" is forking the repo and submitting a PR, but...

Kagi - one of the best uses of money in 2024.

  • laweijfmvo 2 years ago

Kagi, Proton, NextDNS, 1Blocker. My internet experience has gotten a lot less free (as in beer), but I’m totally fine with that.

    • fnordpiglet 2 years ago

The key was it never was free, it’s just you couldn’t see what you were trading for it. I’d much rather do my transactions above the table than behind my back.

The fact that they don't offer any kind of free trial to me is insane.

    • tky 2 years ago

They do. 100 free searches. https://kagi.com/pricing

      • Solvency 2 years ago

Bizarre. When I checked on mobile their was no free pricing tier. A/B testing?

This is a fun idea, and I hope it takes off, but I already noticed some spammy sites, and reporting them isn't easy (it requires a PR).

I understand that adding a site requires a PR to have some barrier to entry, but reporting should probably be more accessible.

  • freediver 2 years ago

Wondering which sites you saw that are spammy, as I consume this 2-3 times a day pretty much every day and have not noticed any. In any case submitting a PR to remove them should not be as burdensome.

I like this, but when I saw "directory" I was hoping to see something more like DMOZ, something ontological rather than a grab bag. Still cool, though, and I intend to spend some time poking around.

This is very cool. Love exploring new ways to make small websites more discoverable since SEO has made them very undiscoverable through search engines.

feedback: flag content button takes me to a 404: https://kagi.com/smallweb/flag_content?

DeepChill 2 years ago

Wouldn't it be cool to have a website where you can discover smaller blogs? Whether you're looking for blogs about tech, philosophy or whatever. And people can leave reviews about those blogs on the website so users can easily find/sort/filter for what they're looking for.

You are describing StumbleUpon and similar sites.

    • aquova 2 years ago

To be fair, StumbleUpon shut down half a decade ago and had vanished from the public consciousness far before that.

mastazi 2 years ago

I see they have a "small Youtube" page.

For a different take on the "small Youtube" concept, also see http://astronaut.io/ (featured here on HN a long time ago)

Does Kagi has an add-on system that allows 3rd party developers to customize their searching/indexing/ranking/etc?
