Seems like they got a few key things wrong. From tfa: "which he sharpened with a spray of saliva". At no point did they add moisture or hone the knife. A file was used, and any knifemaker knows well thats not good enough. Seems like a shitty study however you slice it.
The ethnographic account of an Inuit man manufacturing a knife from his own frozen feces to butcher and disarticulate a dog has permeated both the academic literature and popular culture.
Knives manufactured from frozen human feces do not work.
“In order to procure the necessary raw materials for knife production, one of us (M.I.E.) went on a diet with high protein and fatty acids, which is consistent with an arctic diet, for eight days…”
“Raw material collection did not begin until day four, and then proceeded regularly for the next five days (Table S1). Fecal samples were formed into knives using ceramic molds, “knife molds” (Figs. S1–S2), or molded by hand, “hand-shaped knives””
“We repeated the experiment using the fecal samples of another team member (M.R.B.), whose diet was more traditionally Western (see supplementary online materials)”
This was researched by academics and published in an academic journal. What kind of scholarship does society gain from this? Did no one in the chain take and objective look and consider this unworthy of study, or is the publish-or-perish paradigm so misguided (and worthwhile avenues of study so crowded) that we end up with a paper on frozen shit?
I’ve been unable to sleep at night thinking about whether or not this was possible - glad I can finally get some rest.
So this is why that chocolate ice cream tasted like 2 girls with 1 cup...
With this comment, I think HN has officially matured to the level of a 13-year old girl.
I'm proud of us.
Congrats on the sarcasm

I don't know any knifemakers but I'm pretty sure 9 out of 10 would tell you that a spray of saliva isn't good enough either.
Yeah, you need to give it a good hard lick.

Would it be impolite to say no sh*t?
If it looks like a shitty knife...
This seems a little too on the nose (pun intended) for even the Ig Nobel prize
The authors won the 2020 materials science ignobel.

I was certain this wa going to be a new video on this YouTube channel https://youtube.com/@kiwami-japan?si=Vw81ovNna7x74pEh
Although the fact it did not work gave it away.
(Sadly, I discontinue work on my rabbit pellet gun.)

Quality issue. Sometimes my turds are so hard that alone can be used as baton.
Gives new meaning to poop knife.
maybe the poop knife could work as a poop knife. the requirements aren't as rigid as normal knife work.
Somewhat related: it would take 375 men to forge a 1.5 kg sword: https://youtu.be/Br9Jn3X_f8o
I guess I'll have to think of something else to try this weekend.
It will be interesting to see citations in years to come or if it will make it to "popular articles" in ScienceDirect's front page.
The article is from 2019 and it has 12 citations so far

They had some fun with that one.
News you can use
The incredible degree of clarity and matter-of-factness in the "highlights" made me lose my shit.

If the only objective is to kill the animal rather than skin it, however, I wonder if a frozen turd could make an adequate shank.
It just wasn't cold enough.
I am but(t) a knife sharpener.
literal shitpost
A friend from the east once asked me:
"How do you take a shit, in Siberia?"
As I hesitated to answer, wondering if it was even possible during certain times of year, he said:
"With two sticks - one in each hand - one for the feral dogs and one for the turd."
Masika
did they try against BTs
good to know.
Needs more fiber
siense
No shit.
TLDR; Knives made of shit are shit.
